{"id":1019,"date":"2012-06-10T12:06:05","date_gmt":"2012-06-10T19:06:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/?p=1019"},"modified":"2012-06-10T12:06:05","modified_gmt":"2012-06-10T19:06:05","slug":"bright-idea-report-card-rewards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/2012\/06\/bright-idea-report-card-rewards\/","title":{"rendered":"Bright Idea:  Report Card Rewards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/2012\/06\/bright-idea-report-card-rewards\/report-card\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1026\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1026\" title=\"report-card\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/report-card-300x247.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"247\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/report-card-300x247.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/report-card-500x412.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/audience\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/report-card.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>To claim that <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mimiscafe.com\/\">Mimi&#8217;s Cafe<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0&#8220;<em>delights the senses with cuisine that has a touch of &#8220;Gourmet Francais&#8221;&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0 is probably grounds for deep offense among legions of French chefs &#8211; and the subject of heated debate among philosophers and\u00a0physicists alike as to how incredibly small the measure of \u00a0&#8220;a touch&#8221; must be.<\/p>\n<p>But Mimi&#8217;s Cafe does something profoundly smart and simple that should serve as a point of inspiration&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s been a while since my kids were young enough (so I&#8217;m fuzzy on the specifics), but the gist is that\u00a0Mimi&#8217;s Cafe distributes certificates to local elementary schools that are sent home with year-end report cards. \u00a0The certificate advises parents that <strong>if your child has earned all A&#8217;s &amp; B&#8217;s, then they have also earned a free dessert at Mimi&#8217;s Cafe.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So, why not create a Report Card Reward from your own arts or cultural organization that says, <strong>&#8220;In appreciation of your child&#8217;s artistic pursuit, they&#8217;ve earned a complimentary ticket\/admission&#8221; &#8211; <\/strong>and distribute it to strategically selected schools, teachers or resources, for example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Private Piano Teachers (as well as teachers of other musical instruments),<\/li>\n<li>Dance Studios,<\/li>\n<li>Youth Theater Groups,<\/li>\n<li>Drama Clubs,<\/li>\n<li>Art Schools,<\/li>\n<li>Cultural Heritage Organizations,<\/li>\n<li>Community Centers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To my way of thinking, the ideal application of this idea exists where there&#8217;s a connection made that helps a child understand that what he\/she is doing exists on a spectrum in which there are adults who do that full time and in incredible ways. \u00a0(Similar, I suggest, to when a little-league team (in uniform) attends a major league baseball game.)<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>So, a ticket to the Symphony after a year of studying piano, violin or other instrument, or a<\/li>\n<li>Ticket to the Ballet after a season of jazz &amp; tap, or a<\/li>\n<li>Ticket to the Opera having completed a series of voice lessons, or a<\/li>\n<li>Ticket to a show for the drama club that has worked all semester on their own production, or<\/li>\n<li>Admission to the Art Museum following a semester in a drawing or painting class<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>And as you probably figured out already, my family paid for our meals at Mimi&#8217;s Cafe before the kids got to zealously enjoy their \u00a0&#8220;free dessert.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u2014<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The best way to have a good idea is to have a lot of ideas!<\/strong>\u00a0 In that spirit, AUDIENCE WANTED dedicates this summer to stirring up a potpourri of creative notions &amp; half-baked thoughts around the purpose of growing audiences for the arts &amp; cultural sector. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Suspend practicality &amp; judgment for the moment. \u00a0We are just brainstorming here \u2013 with an emphasis on BIG thinking and CREATIVE efforts. \u00a0<\/em><em>Together, let\u2019s amass a HUGE number of wild &amp; crazy ideas. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Got a\u00a0<strong>Bright Idea<\/strong>\u00a0to contribute?
