WHO\u2019S TO BLAME?<\/p>\n<p>Is the public so disgusted by outdoor sculpture that even temporary defacement is cheered? Who\u2019s to blame? Soon not even works by Calder or Oldenburg will be safe from mockery.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/artopia\/2011\/10\/public-art-cover-up-mock-art-trend.html\/cubeadjusted\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1052\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1052\" title=\"Ojek\/Rosenthal: Alamo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/artopia\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/cubeadjusted.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"136\" height=\"169\" \/><\/a>\u00a0<strong>Olek,<\/strong> the Polish-born crochet artist, made a cheerful one-day coverlet for Tony Rosenthal\u2019s <em>Alamo<\/em>, that point-balanced black cube at Astor Place that each new generation of Cooper Union art students discovers can be rotated with a little bit of muscle. The cube itself is fussy. The rotation adds a populist note to Astor Place. The base of this ugly piece of work was scrawled with the phrase &#8220;in step with the times.&#8221; Was the artist provocateur making fun of Socialist Realism or of Western Pop Culture? Previously this statue has been invisible, so I am not sure this was a service to the public or not. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dnainfo.com\/20110930\/murray-hill-gramercy\/tourist-makeover-of-union-square-statue-gets-parks-department-ok \">LINK<\/a>.
