{"id":599,"date":"2004-12-01T09:37:33","date_gmt":"2004-12-01T17:37:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/artfulmanager\/wp\/2004\/12\/the_ten_commandments_of_arts_a\/"},"modified":"2004-12-01T09:37:33","modified_gmt":"2004-12-01T17:37:33","slug":"the_ten_commandments_of_arts_a","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/artfulmanager\/main\/the_ten_commandments_of_arts_a.php","title":{"rendered":"The Ten Commandments of Arts Advocacy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A colleague recently reminded me of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wisconsinarts.org\/advocacy\/artspath\/dmataraza.htm\">a wonderful keynote speech<\/a> given many moons ago about arts advocacy and connecting the arts to their communities. I&#8217;m usually not a big fan of lists (the seven habits of highly effective habit-book writers, for example), but this one is useful for describing an essential management skillset.<\/p>\n<p>\nDiane Mataraza used to run the Locals program at the National Endowment for the Arts, then moved to the NARAS Foundation, and finally into consulting, where she remains today. I&#8217;ve seen her in action on a few occassions, and heard her talk about what she does. In terms of connecting and being connected to a broad constituency, she&#8217;s at the top of the game.<\/p>\n<p>\nSo, having her list her &#8216;ten commandments of advocacy&#8217; is something worth a moment of time. And here they are, in cryptic form:<\/p>\n<p>\n<i><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Know thy cause\n<li>Know thy issues\n<li>Be well organized\n<li>Know thy community\n<li>Know thy public officials\n<li>Know thy process\n<li>Remember that the levels of success are directly proportional to the numbers involved\n<li>Be persistent\n<li>Forget not the characteristics of human nature\n<li>Lead by example.\n<\/ol>\n<p><\/i><br \/>\nDetails of each commandment are halfway through the speech (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wisconsinarts.org\/advocacy\/artspath\/dmataraza.htm#tencommandments\">jump right to that section<\/a>, if you like).
