This blog post from Artworld Salon<\/a> describes a few upcoming TV reality shows focusing on art and artists. The BBC’s School of Saatchi<\/a> begins tonight. Another effort from Bravo, likely called ArtStar (covered in July by the New York Times<\/i><\/a>), is still percolating. Artworld Salon’s Ossian Ward captures the potential and the tension in such endeavors:<\/p>\n

…there’s obviously a place for the kind of populist programming that can
\ncut through the crap that the general public usually associates with
\nour intellectually elitist art form. However, there’s also an unhealthy
\ntendency here that assumes you can uncover artistic talent like you can
\nwith a singer or rock star — by putting them in front of an audience or
\na panel of judges and expecting them to perform, explain and show off
\ntheir work.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Which reminded me of the fabulous spoof from Monty Python’s Matching Tie and Handkerchief<\/i> album, in which they cover Thomas Hardy writing Return of the Native<\/i> as if it were a stadium event. Blissfully available on YouTube<\/a> (embedded below).<\/p>\n

Is significant artmaking a spectator sport? It’s a complex question. But it’s certainly ripe for comedy.<\/p>\n
