{"id":1340,"date":"2009-08-25T09:02:11","date_gmt":"2009-08-25T16:02:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/artfulmanager\/wp\/2009\/08\/first_reflections_on_the_arts\/"},"modified":"2009-08-25T09:02:11","modified_gmt":"2009-08-25T16:02:11","slug":"first_reflections_on_the_arts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/artfulmanager\/main\/first_reflections_on_the_arts.php","title":{"rendered":"First reflections on the Arts in Crisis whistle stop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Madison, Wisconsin, had a great public conversation with the Kennedy Center&#8217;s Michael Kaiser yesterday, who is less than halfway through his 50-state <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsincrisis.org\/tour\/\">&#8216;Arts in Crisis&#8217; tour<\/a> to discuss arts leadership in tough times. I was fortunate to be the on-stage interviewer and facilitator, among the several hundred arts leaders from around the state gathered in the Overture Center for the Arts. <\/p>\n<p>Early coverage of this particular stop is available from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/entertainment\/arts\/54640607.html\">Milwaukee <i>Journal-Sentinal<\/i><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/77square.com\/arts\/theater\/story_463252\">Madison&#8217;s <i>77 Square<\/i><\/a>. Attendee Christine Harris of the Cultural Alliance for Greater Milwaukee has already <a href=\"http:\/\/www.culturalalliancemke.org\/node\/82\">posted her summary and thoughts<\/a>. And full video and audio are available now on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wiseye.org\/wisEye_programming\/ARCHIVES-forums.html#2485\">Wisconsin Eye<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>My main goals in facilitating the event were twofold:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>to provide a productive forum for arts leaders to engage Mr. Kaiser&#8217;s ideas about leadership into their own work and contexts, and <\/li>\n<li>to encourage Mr. Kaiser to translate those ideas &#8212; formed primarily at large, resourced, major-market institutions &#8212; to the scope and scale available to small and mid-size arts organizations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The group assembled made the first goal a breeze. And Mr. Kaiser&#8217;s thoughtful responses and reflections on his Kansas City Ballet work, and his mentoring work with smaller organizations, helped engage the second goal, as well.<\/p>\n<p>More thoughts as they evolve.
