{"id":1298,"date":"2009-05-13T11:36:40","date_gmt":"2009-05-13T18:36:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/artfulmanager\/wp\/2009\/05\/operas_captured_in_140_charact\/"},"modified":"2009-05-13T11:36:40","modified_gmt":"2009-05-13T18:36:40","slug":"operas_captured_in_140_charact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/artfulmanager\/main\/operas_captured_in_140_charact.php","title":{"rendered":"Operas captured in 140 characters (or less)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/artfulmanager\/main\/does-this-make-me-a-twitterer.php\">diving into Twitter<\/a> last month, one of my happiest discoveries was #operaplot, a competition (launched by <a href=\"http:\/\/theomniscientmussel.com\/about-miss-mussel\/\">this brilliant individual<\/a>) to summarize opera plots within the confines of Twitter&#8217;s 140-character limit &#8212; massive, epic narratives constrained to absurdly small dimensions.<\/p>\n<p>The contest had <a href=\"http:\/\/theomniscientmussel.com\/2009\/04\/operaplot-on-your-mark-get-set-summarize\/\">basic rules<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/theomniscientmussel.com\/2009\/04\/operaplot-prize-partners\/\">fabulous prizes<\/a> donated by web-eager <a href=\"http:\/\/theomniscientmussel.com\/2009\/04\/operaplot-partners-maps\/\">opera companies around the world<\/a>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danielledeniese.com\/home.html\">celebrity judge<\/a>, and no barriers to entry (not even a Twitter account was required). The responses were voluminous and hilarious. Winners <a href=\"http:\/\/theomniscientmussel.com\/2009\/05\/operaplot-winners-round-2\/\">have just been announced<\/a>. No, wait, i changed my mind. *dies* [Faust]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/musicbizkid\">@musicbizkid<\/a> &#8211; Let me get<br \/>\nthis straight: unfathomable treasure if I betroth my loopy daughter to<br \/>\na ghost? Deal. She&#8217;ll meet you by the fjord. [The Flying Dutchman]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Beneath the goofiness lie a thousand lessons about how to engage passionate enthusiasts in the on-line world. But the goofiness, alone, is an absolute good.
