{"id":1278,"date":"2009-04-01T07:38:35","date_gmt":"2009-04-01T14:38:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/artfulmanager\/wp\/2009\/04\/the_ilibrary_of_icongress\/"},"modified":"2009-04-01T07:38:35","modified_gmt":"2009-04-01T14:38:35","slug":"the_ilibrary_of_icongress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/artfulmanager\/main\/the_ilibrary_of_icongress.php","title":{"rendered":"The iLibrary of iCongress"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As essential printed content is increasingly available on-line through <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/\">Google Books<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/openlibrary.org\/\">Open Library<\/a>, and other digitization projects, the Library of Congress has announced initiatives to upload more of other forms of media as well. <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.macworld.co.uk\/digitallifestyle\/news\/index.cfm?RSS&amp;NewsID=25573\">Macworld<\/a><\/i> and <a href=\"http:\/\/politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com\/2009\/03\/30\/library-of-congress-to-step-up-use-of-social-networking-sites\/\">others<\/a> report on the library&#8217;s plans to post film, video, image, and audio materials on iTunes, Flickr, and YouTube, among other sites. Says <i>Macworld<\/i>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Among the items Web surfers can expect on iTunes and YouTube are<br \/>\n100-year-old films from Thomas Edison&#8217;s studio, book talks with<br \/>\ncontemporary authors, early industrial films from Westinghouse<br \/>\nfactories, first-person audio accounts of life in slavery, and inside<br \/>\nlooks into the library&#8217;s holdings, including the rough draft of the<br \/>\nDeclaration of Independence and the contents of President Abraham<br \/>\nLincoln&#8217;s pockets on the night of his assassination.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The articles also mention that the US General Services Administration has forged&nbsp; agreements with Flickr,<br \/>\nYouTube, Vimeo, and blip.tv that will allow other federal agencies to<br \/>\nparticipate in new media, with more agreements to come. Says Library of Congress Director of Communications Matt Raymond: &#8220;Our broad strategy is to &#8216;fish where the fish are,&#8217; and to use the<br \/>\nsites that give our content added value.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>These initiatives should provide more access to resources in the public trust, and even some useful content for arts education, promotion, and context.
