Attendance is passive and unidirectional, the thinking goes. Participation describes a wider range of involvement with and in the arts.<\/p>\n<p>But advocates for that particular word might want to explore the unease it has brought to those in global development circles, where &#8221;participation&#8221; can describe a more subtle and sophisticated approach for the privileged and powerful to get their way.<\/p>\n<p>Case in point: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1856497941?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=bolzcenter-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1856497941\">Participation: the New Tyranny?<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=bolzcenter-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1856497941\" alt=\"\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important; margin: 0px ! important;\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\" \/>, a much-discussed book from almost a decade ago. Or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1842774611?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=bolzcenter-20&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=390957&#038;creativeASIN=1842774611\">Participation &#8212; From Tyranny to Transformation?<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=bolzcenter-20&#038;l=as2&#038;o=1&#038;a=1842774611\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important; margin:0px !important;\" \/>, a more recent response to the challenge.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s great opportunity and good intent in building engagement and two-way participation between artists and audiences.
