He offers a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bioteams.com\/2007\/01\/04\/the_virtual_team.html\">quick team profile checklist<\/a> to see where the team and the task may be out of whack, focusing on eight areas:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Nature of Team Objective\n<li>Team Leadership\/Management Style\n<li>Team Member Profile\n<li>Team Shape\n<li>Team Environment\n<li>Team Working Approach\n<li>Team Social Dynamic\n<li>Team Technology Factor\n<\/ol>\n<p>He also quotes Jon Katzenbach and Douglas Smith, <a href=\"http:\/\/harvardbusinessonline.hbsp.harvard.edu\/b01\/en\/common\/item_detail.jhtml?id=R0507P\">writing in the <i>Harvard Business Review<\/i><\/a>, who identified three types of teams, each requiring a different communications and control strategy to move them forward:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Recommender Teams<\/b>: those that recommend things &#8212; task forces or project groups <i>(often part-time; great for reviewing work but can lack a &#8220;team engine&#8221; for getting detailed work done)<\/i>.\n<li><b>Doer Teams<\/b>: those that make or do things &#8212; manufacturing, operations, or marketing groups <i>(great for doing things, but their networks may be limited to their own functional areas which can blind them to some innovation and cross-functional opportunities)<\/i>.\n<li><b>Managing Teams<\/b>: those that run things &#8212; groups that oversee some significant functional activity <i>(often staffed with senior executives who have serious time management challenges and are unlikely to engage with traditional team communication and meeting approaches)<\/i>.\n<\/ol>\n<p>NOTE: The title of this weblog entry comes from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.despair.com\/meetings.html\">a favorite &#8221;demotivation&#8221; poster<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.despair.com\">Despair.com<\/a>.
