Although chiefly remembered for prodigious cheerleading on behalf of Northwest artists, she was also a fashion-forward supporter of civil rights, ecology and education for everybody.<br \/>\nIn 1978, a group of her friends approached the Seattle Art Museum with the idea of an annual award in her name for emerging Northwest artists.<\/p>\n<p>As the economy continues to limp along, more artists need the money. Surely they&#8217;re not bothering to apply primarily for the honor, which is local. Artists taking news of their win to New York, LA, Chicago and even San Francisco are stones dropped in a dream pond that sends out no ripples.<\/p>\n<p>Within the region, however, a Bowen means something, although there is<br \/>\na lot more award money in play in recent years, thanks to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.henryart.org\/mediathing\/upload\/911\/The_Brink_award_at_the_Henry.pdf\">Brink<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com\/art\/archives\/115511.asp\">Neddy<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artisttrust.org\/\">Artist Trust,<\/a> the <a href=\"http:\/\/artipedia.org\/artsnews\/exhibitions\/2008\/07\/08\/portland-art-museum-awards-arlene-schnitzer-prize-to-whiting-tennis\/\">Arlene <strike>Schnitzer<\/strike> Schwitzer Award<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.seattlepi.nwsource.com\/art\/archives\/144828.asp\">Stranger&#8217;s Genius Awards<\/a>, and grants from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.4culture.org\/\">4 Culture<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattle.gov\/arts\">City Artist awards<\/a> from the Office of Arts &amp; Cultural Affairs. <\/p>\n<p>Finalists this year are <a href=\"http:\/\/jovenciodelapaz.com\/\">Jovencio de la Paz<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lisa-cooley.com\/artists\/view\/josh-faught\">Josh Faught<\/a> from Oregon; <a href=\"http:\/\/jennyheishman.com\/\">Jenny Heishman<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.howardhouse.net\/artists\/johnsonsm\/default.html\">Sean M.
