Featuring <a href=\"http:\/\/www.juliealpert.com\/\">Julie Albert<\/a>, Lise Graham and <a href=\"http:\/\/cablegriffith.blogspot.com\/\">Cable Griffith<\/a>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Beloved by grade-school art teachers, cut-out paper on paper collage can easily be overworked and inert, especially the way Alpert makes them, which is stuffed to the gills. And yet, hers work. It&#8217;s easy to see the ghost of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beardenfoundation.org\/index2.shtml\">Romare Bearden<\/a> in her rough-hewed shapes. She&#8217;s going for similar territory too, the crumbling walls and make-do repairs of a rundown urban core. <\/p>\n<p>She hasn&#8217;t hitched her wagon to his star, however. His tonalities are dark and tightly orchestrated. Hers have a wider range, with a little zing of wild thing. <\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"juliealpertcoll.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/juliealpertcoll.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"margin: 0pt auto 20px; text-align: center; display: block;\" width=\"296\" height=\"427\" \/><\/span>If Graham had created the world, buildings would be able to lift themselves off their foundations to dance. They&#8217;d settle back without missing a beat or cracking the skulls of their occupants.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"lisegrahamred.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/lisegrahamred.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"margin: 0pt auto 20px; text-align: center; display: block;\" width=\"450\" height=\"350\" \/><\/span>Griffith is a pattern painter aspiring to volume. If he painted heads instead of landscapes, he&#8217;d give them crew cuts. As his shapes hug the ground, their pastel shades, like yeast in dough, attempt to rise.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"cablegriffith.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/cablegriffith.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"margin: 0pt auto 20px; text-align: center; display: block;\" width=\"450\" height=\"354\" \/><\/span><b><i>Fullness Passing<\/i>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patriciahagen.com\/\">Patricia Hagen<\/a> at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.punchgallery.org\/exhibitions\/2009-08.html\">Punch Gallery<\/a> through Saturday.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Hagen is interested not in ripeness but what follows it, after the baby&#8217;s been fed, the seed has dropped from the pod and the cut flowers have begun to droop in the vase.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"patriciahagendroop.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/patriciahagendroop.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"margin: 0pt auto 20px; text-align: center; display: block;\" width=\"339\" height=\"427\" \/><\/span><b><i>Witness<\/i>, David French at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lindahodgesgallery.com\/exhibit\/exhibit.html\">Linda Hodges<\/a>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>French&#8217;s sculptures remind me of keepsakes, something broken off and saved to be passed down from mother to daughter, a moment of youth long gone.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"davidfrenchbloom.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/davidfrenchbloom.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"margin: 0pt auto 20px; text-align: center; display: block;\" width=\"300\" height=\"402\" \/><\/span><b>Carrie Marill and Robert Yoder at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.howardhouse.net\/current\/index.html\">Howard House<\/a><\/b>. <\/p>\n<p>(Yoder reviewed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/2009\/08\/robert-yoder---not-showing-at.html\">here<\/a>. ) Marrill&#8217;s men at work: They&#8217;re too busy to notice that they&#8217;re already gone.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"carriemarillmen.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/carriemarillmen.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"margin: 0pt auto 20px; text-align: center; display: block;\" width=\"400\" height=\"291\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Land(s)cape at Soil.
