Although drawn to Christian symbols of sacrifice, in his<br \/>\nhands the final product is gorgeous. He puts a top hat on his influences, which he describes as: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>African sculpture, Japanese aesthetics, Mexican folk<br \/>\narts, nature, personal experience and relationships, family, music,<br \/>\nChristian art (both Gothic and Medieval) and other artist&#8217;s creations,<br \/>\nare some major influences I draw from. There might<br \/>\nin moss in the garden but never mold in his closet.<\/p>\n<p>Like Graves,<br \/>\nCalderon makes light work of heavy subjects. The suffering face imprinted in sweat on<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Veil_of_Veronica\"><i>Veronica&#8217;s Veil <\/i><\/a>is gone. All that&#8217;s left is the hair, ropey black and<br \/>\nalive.<\/p>\n<p>(Calderon, <i>Trophy<\/i>, cast bronze, 2008)<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/markcalderonhair.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"markcalderonhair.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/assets_c\/2009\/08\/markcalderonhair-thumb-300x465-9529.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"margin: 0pt auto 20px; text-align: center; display: block;\" width=\"300\" height=\"465\" \/><\/a><\/span>In<br \/>\nlarger sculptures, such as <i>Globo<\/i> in the current show, Calderon<br \/>\npositions himself somewhere between <a href=\"http:\/\/junkaneko.com\/\">Jun Kaneko<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gregkucera.com\/millett.htm\">Peter Millett<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/petershelton.net\/\">Peter<br \/>\nShelton<\/a>, all West Coast masters of fluid sculptural line, yet for Calderon, the<br \/>\naction is on the surface, as if he intended a kind of eroded Braille<br \/>\nthat had lost its literal meaning through weathering.<\/p>\n<p>(Calderon, <i>Globo<\/i>, lead on Styrofoam and modified cement, 2009, 85&#8243;x33&#8243;x33&#8243;)<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"markcalderongobo.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/markcalderongobo.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"margin: 0pt auto 20px; text-align: center; display: block;\" width=\"302\" height=\"687\" \/><\/span>Through Sept. 26.
