She draws madonnas from a tattoo parlor, outer-space Virgin Marys and their animal companions.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"toshidonkey.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/toshidonkey.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"margin: 0pt auto 20px; text-align: center; display: block;\" width=\"400\" height=\"499\" \/><\/span><br \/><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"toshibeautybeast.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/toshibeautybeast.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"margin: 0pt auto 20px; text-align: center; display: block;\" width=\"401\" height=\"337\" \/><\/span> <\/p>\n<div>The Virgin of the Donkey (<i>Untitled (donkey)<\/i> 11 X 8.5 inches) blows bubbles with her hair. The Madonna with Monkey (<i>The Engagement<\/i>, 14 X 17 inches) allows base desire to perch on her knee, but she&#8217;s nevertheless tuned to celestial things. <\/p>\n<p>Working in oils, Asai plays with the suggestion of depths, populating her surfaces with greater and lesser beings emerging and receding within an orchestrated flow.
