{"id":867,"date":"2009-07-31T14:30:32","date_gmt":"2009-07-31T21:30:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/wp\/2009\/07\/its_a_cupcake_shop_people\/"},"modified":"2009-07-31T14:30:32","modified_gmt":"2009-07-31T21:30:32","slug":"its_a_cupcake_shop_people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/2009\/07\/its_a_cupcake_shop_people.html","title":{"rendered":"Art and cupcakes: cough up the artist&#8217;s names"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The opening of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cupcakeroyale.com\/\">Cupcake Royale<\/a> on Capitol Hill earned ecstatic notices from Seattle art bloggers, some of whom are personally involved.<\/p>\n<p>Joey Veltkamp of <a href=\"http:\/\/joeyveltkamp.blogspot.com\/2009\/07\/cupcake-royale-capitol-hill.html\"><i>Best Of<\/i> <\/a>will serve as art curator after the first show, curated by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jamesharrisgallery.com\/Artists\/Roy%20McMakin\/McMakin.htm\">Roy McMakin<\/a>,&nbsp; who with Ian Butcher (both from&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.domesticarchitecture.com\/\">Domestic Architecture<\/a>) designed the space. (Check the <i>Best Of <\/i>link for artists now on view.)<\/p>\n<p>Not only is the place lovely, it features seriously good art perched in various nooks and crannies. If you want to know who did what, however, you have to follow the corridor to the bathrooms to find the credits. <\/p>\n<p>Museums and (more frequently) galleries tuck identifying labels into obscure locations (or print maps available at the front desk) when they don&#8217;t want to disturb the pristine experience of viewing the art. But this is a cupcake shop. There is no pristine experience. Put the artist&#8217;s names and title beside the art.
