{"id":816,"date":"2009-07-17T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2009-07-17T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/wp\/2009\/07\/beyond_madame_lefarge_-_yinka\/"},"modified":"2009-07-17T05:00:00","modified_gmt":"2009-07-17T12:00:00","slug":"beyond_madame_lefarge_-_yinka","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/2009\/07\/beyond_madame_lefarge_-_yinka.html","title":{"rendered":"Beyond Madame Defarge &#8211; Yinka Shonibare and Shary Boyle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Before <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/06\/21\/arts\/design\/21sont.html?_r=1&amp;ref=arts\">Yinka Shonibare<\/a> appeared at the Brooklyn Museum as part of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brooklynmuseum.org\/opencollection\/exhibitions\/683\/\"><i>Sensation<\/i><\/a>, he was at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattleartmuseum.org\/\">Seattle Art Museum<\/a> with a gallery devoted to him, a rare case of Seattle being in the lead on the work of a fast-rising, international force.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.paam.org\/fairbrother.html\">Trevor Fairbrother<\/a>, at the time SAM&#8217;s Deputy director of art and curator of modern art, had seen Shonibare&#8217;s work in London and bought an installation titled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brooklynmuseum.org\/opencollection\/exhibitions\/683\/\"><i>Nuclear Family<\/i><\/a> more or less on the spot.<\/p>\n<p>Back in Brooklyn once again with his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brooklynmuseum.org\/exhibitions\/yinka_shonibare_mbe\/\">own exhibit<\/a> I plan to see before it closes September 20, Shonibare has become ubiquitous. It&#8217;s a dangerous position. Only an artist who is really hot can tumble in a season to tedious. So many write and talk about the star of the moment that the audience tires of itself and blames the artist for its boredom. <\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Shonibaretussle.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/Shonibaretussle.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"margin: 0pt auto 20px; text-align: center; display: block;\" height=\"308\" width=\"400\" \/><\/span>By taking longer to emerge and (in all senses) on a far smaller scale, Toronto&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sharyboyle.com\/\">Shary Boyle <\/a>might end up with something resembling an advantage.
