His chairs that are figures are made from material signs of distress (barricade tape, band aides, crumbling bits of brick wall and discarded foam core), but they occupy space with a jaunty elan. I&#8217;m not sure the same can be said of Grussgott. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I used the swastika as a literal symbol, immediately recognizable as a<br \/>\nrepresentation of hate. It&#8217;s both in a vulnerable\/boxed in position as<br \/>\nwell as at the center of the image. The intention was to simultaneously<br \/>\ndiscuss the ways in which symbols are sensitized and how overtime, even<br \/>\na swastika can become a cliche.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/assets_c\/2009\/05\/GrussgottConstruct1-6689.html\" onclick=\"window.open('http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/assets_c\/2009\/05\/GrussgottConstruct1-6689.html','popup','width=400,height=402,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/assets_c\/2009\/05\/GrussgottConstruct1-thumb-300x301-6689.jpg\" alt=\"GrussgottConstruct1.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"margin: 0pt auto 20px; text-align: center; display: block;\" width=\"300\" height=\"301\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/assets_c\/2009\/05\/Grussgottconstruct2-6692.html\" onclick=\"window.open('http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/assets_c\/2009\/05\/Grussgottconstruct2-6692.html','popup','width=400,height=402,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/assets_c\/2009\/05\/Grussgottconstruct2-thumb-300x301-6692.jpg\" alt=\"Grussgottconstruct2.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"margin: 0pt auto 20px; text-align: center; display: block;\" width=\"300\" height=\"301\" \/><\/a><\/span><br \/>But swastikas are not cliches. John Updike once wrote that what interests Saul Bellow does not appear to interest his characters. There&#8217;s a similar disconnect between what Grussgott wants to convey in his work and the work itself. As long as he stays away from ultimate evil, which swamps him, there are worse problems. In the end, who cares what the artist was thinking?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;Grussgott continues at <a href=\"http:\/\/greygalleryandlounge.com\/gallery\/\">Grey Gallery<\/a> through June 6.
