Within that category, many series followed, such as <i>London Series<\/i>, <i>Tidal Series<\/i>, <i>Thaw Series<\/i>, <i>Japan Series<\/i> and overall, the <i>World Series<\/i>. From their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boylefamily.co.uk\/boyle\/about\/index.html\">Web site<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Each<br \/>\nof these series has involved various random selection techniques to<br \/>\nisolate a rectangle of the Earth&#8217;s surface. In the case of the World<br \/>\nSeries, 1000 random selections were made from a giant map of the world<br \/>\nby blindfolded visitors to the exhibition at London&#8217;s ICA in 1969.<br \/>\nThe random selection serves several purposes: nothing is excluded as a<br \/>\npotential subject; the particular is chosen as a representative of the<br \/>\nwhole &amp; it reduces their subjective role as artists &amp; creators<br \/>\nto that of &#8220;presenters&#8221;. To present a slice of reality as objectively<br \/>\n&amp; truthfully as possible. They call this &#8220;motiveless appraisal&#8221;.<br \/>\nOnce the random selection has been made, they recreate the site in a<br \/>\nfixed and permanent form as a painted fibreglass relief. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mark Boyle died in 2005, but Hills and their two children, Sebastian and Georgia, continue as Boyle Family.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/assets_c\/2009\/05\/BoyleFamily-6331.html\" onclick=\"window.open('http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/assets_c\/2009\/05\/BoyleFamily-6331.html','popup','width=540,height=535,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/assets_c\/2009\/05\/BoyleFamily-thumb-300x297-6331.jpg\" alt=\"BoyleFamily.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"margin: 0pt auto 20px; text-align: center; display: block;\" width=\"300\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><\/span><br \/>I can&#8217;t find a review of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.feldmangallery.com\/pages\/artistsrffa\/artstr01.html\">Tavares Strachan<\/a>&#8216;s <i>Portal from Where We Are Is Always Miles Away <\/i>that mentioned the Boyles, even though Strachan is singing a nonrandom version of their song. From Roberta Smith&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/02\/20\/arts\/design\/20show.html?8dpc\">review<\/a>,<br \/>\nyou&#8217;d think Strachan was the first to pick up a piece of the earth and<br \/>\nreplicate it, pound for pound, in Strachan&#8217;s case, the place where he<br \/>\ngot a parking ticket.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"TavaresStrachenparking.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/TavaresStrachenparking.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"margin: 0pt auto 20px; text-align: center; display: block;\" width=\"288\" height=\"431\" \/><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And here we go again, Karen Rosenberg on Strachan in the <a href=\"http:\/\/artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com\/2009\/05\/01\/an-art-project-of-the-coolest-kind\/\">NYT<\/a><br \/>\non Sunday, no tip of the hat to Boyle Family. Milan Kundera called<br \/>\nhistory a thin thread of remembering stretched over an ocean of<br \/>\nforgetting. It is the job of everyone who writes about art to<br \/>\nstrengthen that thread.<span><\/span> <\/p>\n<p>Nothing against Strachan.
