Jodhpur painters could produce palm-size cosmologies full of gods and goddesses, kings and queens, dancing girls, flute players, warrior monkeys and battles waged on the backs of elephants.<br \/>\nOver time, however, they allowed themselves more room. And instead of filling bigger spaces in a miniaturist style, they expanded into wider worlds with open, rolling rhythms and colors with air in them. The jewel-box shine of the miniature became the saffron and sherbet shades of a dynamic pleasure dome.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/assets_c\/2009\/03\/2008708094-4387.html\" onclick=\"window.open('http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/assets_c\/2009\/03\/2008708094-4387.html','popup','width=608,height=218,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/assets_c\/2009\/03\/2008708094-thumb-350x125-4387.jpg\" alt=\"2008708094.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-right\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 20px 20px; float: right;\" width=\"350\" height=\"125\" \/><\/a><\/span>However gorgeous, and it is gorgeous, such a show wouldn&#8217;t be expected to attract big numbers in Seattle, even with ecstatic local reviews (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestranger.com\/seattle\/your-brain-lights-up-with-happiness\/Content?oid=1118306\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.seattlepi.com\/art\/archives\/161466.asp\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattleweekly.com\/2009-02-11\/arts\/ravishing-point\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/seattletimes.nwsource.com\/html\/thearts\/2008712508_garden06.html\">here<\/a>). My favorite review headline from this group (first click) comes from Jen Graves &#8211; <b><i>Your Brain Lights Up With Happiness<\/i><\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>Yes it does. Maybe outrageous skill and blissed-out iconography are more powerful attractions than previously imagined, or maybe it&#8217;s the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1010048\/\"><i>Slumdog<\/i><\/a> effect &#8211; all things Indian riding the <i>Slumdog<\/i> wave. <\/p>\n<p>Whatever the reason, SAM reports that <i>Garden and Cosmos<\/i> is running 200 percent over the museum&#8217;s optimistic pre-crash projections. It&#8217;s on view at the museum&#8217;s sleepy satellite venue, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattleartmuseum.org\/visit\/visitSAAm.asp\">Seattle Asian Art Museum<\/a> in Volunteer Park. Its numbers are dwarfed only by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattleartmuseum.org\/AboutUs\/History\/History.asp\">King Tut in 1978<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattlepi.com\/visualart\/anot10.shtml\">Bruce Guenther&#8217;s Jacob Lawrence retrospective in 1986<\/a>, both before SAM moved its headquarters downtown. <\/p>\n<p>Speaking of downtown, SAM&#8217;s doing well there too. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattleartmuseum.org\/Exhibit\/exhibitDetail.asp?eventID=13785\">Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness<\/a> is attracting the pre-crash projection of 20,000 visitors in the first three weeks. Considering the attendance dive SAM experienced after the economy fell apart in the last year of the Bush administration, that number is amazing.<\/p>\n<p>Possibly it has something to do with <a href=\"http:\/\/slog.thestranger.com\/slog\/archives\/2009\/02\/21\/can_you_really_just_waltz_into\/\">this<\/a>. Advertising its pay-what-you-can admission policy (instead of keeping it a secret), was second on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattlepi.com\/visualart\/392977_youngsam22.html\">this list<\/a> of what SAM needs to do to connect with a younger audience.
