Walk its streets at night, you&#8217;ll see the flickering colored lights of televisions talking to each other in living rooms, dens, kitchens, bedrooms and baths.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Rice_untitled.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/Rice_untitled.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-none\" style=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"234\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The cathode ray light that saturates most of the world didn&#8217;t exist until <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philo_Farnsworth\">Philo Farnsworth<\/a> invented it in 1928. Because he believed that corporations could be trusted, his career was a sad one. The honor they didn&#8217;t give him came after his death, when <a href=\"http:\/\/www.paikstudios.com\/\">Nam June Paik<\/a> in 1974 turned what Farnsworth had wrought into art.<\/p>\n<p>Although Paik is interested in everything about television, its shape and sound qualities, its pretensions to realism, its hallucinatory snows, blips and flickers, Seattle&#8217;s Tivon Rice is interested mainly in Farnsworth&#8217;s light. <\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Comp1_sml.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/Comp1_sml.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-none\" style=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Rice&#8217;s focus differentiates him from most of the major light artists who precede him, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/images.google.com\/images?hl=en&amp;q=dan+flavin&amp;btnG=Search+Images&amp;gbv=2\">Dan Flavin<\/a> (fluorescence) and <a href=\"http:\/\/images.google.com\/images?gbv=2&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=1&amp;q=James+Turrell&amp;btnG=Search+Images\">James Turrell<\/a> (fictionalized ethereal).<br \/>\nFrom the specific, Rice moves from the spectacular and down to the humbly interactive &#8211; tube as church and tube as intimate companion. <\/p>\n<p><i>Pink Noise: From a finger<\/i>&nbsp; (2008) is part of his current exhibit at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.911media.org\/gallery\/current-exhibitions\">911 Media Arts Center<\/a>. Rub the fleshy screen under the single digit and another will appear to do what you&#8217;re doing, from gentle massage to nervous scratch.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"tivon2.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/tivon2.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-none\" style=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Through Tuesday at 911.
