{"id":360,"date":"2009-03-24T18:29:27","date_gmt":"2009-03-25T01:29:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/wp\/2009\/03\/against_forgetting_-_the_conse\/"},"modified":"2009-03-24T18:29:27","modified_gmt":"2009-03-25T01:29:27","slug":"against_forgetting_-_the_conse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/2009\/03\/against_forgetting_-_the_conse.html","title":{"rendered":"Against time &#8211; the conservation of art"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NYT art critic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/08\/25\/arts\/25russell.html\">John Russell<\/a> once called an oil painting a &#8220;vegetable construct that changes in time.&#8221; Conservation steps in to manage change, whether it evolved slowly or happened in a second. <\/p>\n<p>A case of the latter: Jeff Koons&#8217; <em>St. John the Baptist<\/em> probably cracked its arm during a short ride through Seattle from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artechseattle.com\/\">Artech<\/a> storage to the Bagley and Virginia Wright Exhibition Space in 2004.<br \/>\nProduced in an edition of three with an artist&#8217;s proof, <em>Saint John<\/em> is from the 1988 <i>Banality<\/i> series of large-scale, ceramic sculptures. <\/p>\n<p><em>Michael Jackson and Bubbles<\/em> from the same series is the largest porcelain sculpture ever made. <em>Saint John<\/em> is a close second, at 56 inches high, 29 inches wide and 17 inches deep.<br \/>\nStory about the conservation efforts that left <em>John<\/em> whole but with a scar <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattlepi.com\/visualart\/169459_koonscrack19.html\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Thursday night at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cornish.edu\/\">Cornish College of the Arts<\/a> is a panel discussion with the overblown title, <em>Eros-Bios-Thanatos: Conundrums in Conservation of Contemporary Art, <\/em>at 1000 Lenora Street, 7:30-9 p.m., 7th floor.<\/p>\n<p>The panelists are worth hearing: Mitchell Hearns Bishop from the Getty Conservation Institute &amp; curator, Los Angeles County Arboretum;<br \/>\nNicholas Dorman, chief conservator, Seattle Art Museum;<br \/>\nClaire Gerhard, independent conservator, now in Seattle recently working at the Whitney, MoMa &amp; Mozambique, and moderator Elizabeth Darrow.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NYT art critic John Russell once called an oil painting a &#8220;vegetable construct that changes in time.&#8221; Conservation steps in to manage change, whether it evolved slowly or happened in a second.
