{"id":1910,"date":"2010-09-15T15:23:31","date_gmt":"2010-09-15T22:23:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/wp\/2010\/09\/john_grade_loves_your_elephant\/"},"modified":"2010-09-15T15:23:31","modified_gmt":"2010-09-15T22:23:31","slug":"john_grade_loves_your_elephant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/2010\/09\/john_grade_loves_your_elephant.html","title":{"rendered":"John Grade loves your elephant skin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Take your skin that&#8217;s smooth as a baby&#8217;s bottom and shove it. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johngrade.com\/projects\/\">John Grade<\/a> loves puckers, knots, sags, discolorations, ruts and rough spots. <br \/><i><br \/>Grade, pronounced Grotty, <\/i><i>Circuit 2010 &#8211; Glazed ceramic bonded with gypsum polymer to corn-based resin embedded with marine netting.<br \/>\n9 x 24 x 24 feet<\/i><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"johngradeskin.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/johngradeskin.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"text-align: center; display: block; margin: 0pt auto 20px;\" height=\"310\" width=\"501\" \/>After its exhibition at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidsongalleries.com\/artists\/grade\/grade-circuit.php\">Davidson Galleries<\/a>,<i> Circuit<\/i> will spend a year on a mountain, accumulating changes as a fast-forward into old age.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.catrionajeffries.com\/b_j_pethick_works.html\">Jerry Pethick<\/a> mined the vein of weathering change before Grade. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catrionajeffries.com\/d_j_pethick_news.html\"><i>Time Top<\/i><\/a> was Pethick&#8217;s last major work before his death in 2003. Granted, Grade&#8217;s work is more of a performance than Pethick&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>Grade:<br \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"johngradewings.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/johngradewings.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"text-align: center; display: block; margin: 0pt auto 20px;\" height=\"475\" width=\"356\" \/>But Pethick had a better idea of what works in a gallery. He tended to keep the inside and outside separate. Not for him would be Grade&#8217;s forlorn and drab grouping of dark husks in a gallery.
