It emerges into consciousness whenever the world presents its echo. On a fine day, for instance, you note <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jean-Honor%C3%A9_Fragonard\">Fragonard<\/a> clouds. In the rain by a pond, you see <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Constable\">John Constable<\/a> muck. Smashed glass on the street, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/2010\/01\/gretchen-bennett---the-dark-th-1.html\">Gretchen Bennett<\/a>. White-out paint passages to cover graffiti,<a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/368367\"> Matt McCormick<\/a>. Open any old refrigerator, and you remember a video of a wolf chasing down dinner. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.odoka.org\/\">Vanessa Renwick<\/a>, <i>Hunting Requires Optimism<\/i>.) See a pit bull cock its head to note the approach of a stranger, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sedersgallery.com\/Artists\/028\/28_Spafford.htm\">Michael Spafford<\/a>&#8216;s<i> Minotaur and the Maiden<\/i> series from the 1980s comes to mind. (The long jaw, the barrel chest, the spring in the legs, poised to strike.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"michaelspaffordminota.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/michaelspaffordminota.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"text-align: center; display: block; margin: 0pt auto 20px;\" width=\"350\" height=\"549\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/wrongdistance.com\/?p=3294\">Wrong Distance<\/a> made the same point quite nicely: a random photo of a room instantly evokes German painter <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk\/artists\/matthias_weischer.htm\">Matthias Weischer<\/a>.&#8221;It&#8217;s far busier than something he would ever do, the colors are not quite, it has a person in it, it&#8217;s a photo. and yet&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The art that matters to you lives in your head.
