Every 20 minutes helicopters would pass overhead, like heavy-metal clockwork. Looking at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/zachschrock\/1141391207\/\">Zack<br \/>\nSchrock<\/a>&#8216;s photo brought that time back.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"zackschrockcopter.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/zackschrockcopter.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"text-align: center; display: block; margin: 0pt auto 20px;\" height=\"322\" width=\"502\" \/>Living under helicopter rotation is not good for the nervous system. I moved. What about those who can&#8217;t move, who grow up in American neighborhoods that are under regular overhead&nbsp; surveillance? <\/p>\n<p>The anti-war movement in the 1960s gave participants (and bystanders, trying to get out of the way) an experience impoverished people of color continue to endure as a matter of course &#8211; the chance to be under served and over policed. <\/p>\n<p>From Paul Beatty&#8217;s 1997 novel, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/White-Boy-Shuffle-Novel\/dp\/031228019X\"><i>The White Boy Shuffle<\/i><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I turned onto Whitworth Avenue and suddenly found myself engulfed in a blinding waterfall of light. Instinctively, my hands shot above my head as I waited for the standard drill&#8211;&#8220;Face down on the ground, hands behind your head, ankles crossed. Move!&#8221; But no instructions were forthcoming. I waited a minute or two and looked for a police cruiser; nothing. No beat cops, only the helicopter hovering overhead and me standing in a fifty-foot circle of light, becoming more appreciative of the moon.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Beatty&#8217;s novel inspired <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitney.org\/www\/2006biennial\/artists.php?artist=Newkirk_Kori\">Kori Newkirk<\/a>&#8216;s mural in <a href=\"http:\/\/findarticles.com\/p\/articles\/mi_m1248\/is_9_89\/ai_78334703\/?tag=content;col1\"><i>Freestyle<\/i><\/a>. Made of black pomade applied to a white wall, Newkirk&#8217;s rendition of the species <i>ghetto bird<\/i> smelled like hair product. Its title, <i>All Over<\/i>, links it to Jackson Pollock, even though the latter&#8217;s fields fail to suggest a similar soundtrack. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"korinewkirkallover.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/korinewkirkallover.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"text-align: center; display: block; margin: 0pt auto 20px;\" height=\"281\" width=\"437\" \/>After 9\/11, of course, the entire country became suspicious of what might come from the sky.<\/p>\n<p><i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.creativetime.org\/programs\/archive\/59\/artist_macdonald.html\">Euan Macdonald<\/a>, &#8220;Untitled, (three falling pianos), 2006, triptych, gouache on paper, 101&#215;76 each<\/i> (Image <a href=\"http:\/\/images.google.com\/imgres?imgurl=http:\/\/www.vamiali.net\/emdetail.jpg&amp;imgrefurl=http:\/\/www.vamiali.net\/inner.htm&amp;usg=__Wf-iBPhMUVwhH8kFqiCXl_t6AXU=&amp;h=442&amp;w=425&amp;sz=11&amp;hl=en&amp;start=3&amp;sig2=X3RtDkVsMQbnrC0owxlxpQ&amp;um=1&amp;itbs=1&amp;tbnid=jW_ByL4XMyPAkM:&amp;tbnh=127&amp;tbnw=122&amp;prev=\/images%3Fq%3Deuan%2Bmacdonald%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26tbs%3Disch:1&amp;ei=LQaFS76fD5j-swO7872sDw\">via<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"euanmacdonaldpiano.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/euanmacdonaldpiano.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"text-align: center; display: block; margin: 0pt auto 20px;\" height=\"445\" width=\"426\" \/>Macdonald&#8217;s <i>A Little Ramble<\/i> is at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.westernbridge.org\/\">Western Bridge<\/a> through April 17.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 1969, when the National Guard occupied Berkeley, California, I was living in an apartment just north of campus.
