Walt Whitman did so under a pseudonym for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bartleby.com\/142\/index1.html\"><i>Leaves of Grass<\/i><\/a>, and his reputation remains unsullied. <\/p>\n<p>The closest thing to favorable are Victoria Ellison&#8217;s three paragraphs tacked on to the end of her Calder <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seattleweekly.com\/2009-10-28\/arts\/visual-arts-star-systems\/\">review<\/a>.<br \/>\nThe decision to turn Michelangelo into a Calder postscript pushes in<br \/>\nthe opposite direction of her generous comments. (Whose work got the<br \/>\nillustration? My Calder <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/2009\/10\/alexander-calder---i-believe-i.html\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>In his fine Calder <a href=\"http:\/\/sscummings.blogspot.com\/2009\/10\/alexander-calder-at-sam.html\">review<\/a>, Stephen Cummings reduced his reaction to Michelangelo to the following:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It may go without saying that SAM has a bit of a (deserved) reputation for mounting second rate shows. (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.seattleartmuseum.org\/exhibit\/exhibitDetail.asp?eventID=16554\">Michelangelo<\/a> certainly qualifies.) <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>If<br \/>\nSAM has this reputation, it is unearned. At the region&#8217;s flagship<br \/>\nmuseum I&#8217;ve never seen an exhibit as overblown and underfed. It&#8217;s the<br \/>\nkind of thing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.famsf.org\/fam\/press\/press.asp?presskey=219\">John Buchanan<\/a> used to surround with superlatives when he was <strike>fund-raiser-in-chief<\/strike> director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/portlandartmuseum.org\/\">Portland Art Museum<\/a>. He has since taken his brass-band personal style to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.famsf.org\/index.asp\">Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco<\/a>, causing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?f=\/c\/a\/2007\/09\/02\/MNSMRQ8I5.DTL\">Kenneth Baker<\/a> great dismay.<\/p>\n<p>Back to Walt Whitman:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The 1855 publication of <i>Leaves of Grass<\/i><br \/>\nwas heralded by anonymous reviews printed in New York papers, which<br \/>\nwere clearly written by Whitman himself. They accurately described the<br \/>\nbreak-through nature of his &#8220;transcendent and new&#8221; work. &#8220;An American<br \/>\nbard at last!&#8221; trumpeted one self-review. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/exhibits\/treasures\/whitman-leavesofgrass.html\">more<\/a>)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Anyone caught doing that today would surely share the fate of James Frey. He took a beating for his memoir, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Million-Little-Pieces-James-Frey\/dp\/0385507755\"><i>A Million Little Pieces<\/i><\/a>, discovered after publication to be partly fictionalized.&nbsp; In response to his critics, Frey commissioned a painting by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edruscha.com\/\">Ed Ruscha<\/a>.
