(Story <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/10\/08\/arts\/design\/08artprize.html?ref=arts\">here<\/a>) <b>Update:<\/b> Brooklyn painter Ran Ortner won first prize, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/10\/09\/arts\/design\/09art.html?_r=1\">here<\/a>, via <a href=\"http:\/\/c-monster.net\/\">C-Monster<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In California I think (hard to know from the Web site), Balsa Man offers <a href=\"http:\/\/balsaman.org\/tiny-art-grants\/\"><i>Tiny Art Grants<\/i><\/a>. A panel of <strike>experts<\/strike> God-knows-who selects the winners, who get from $1 to $20 to help them make art that is suitably diminutive.<\/p>\n<p>In Seattle, <a href=\"http:\/\/vital5productions.com\/aag\/index.html\">Vital 5 Productions<\/a> gives away money in $500 increments that are rigorously random and named for clarity&#8217;s sake the <i>Arbitrary Art Grants<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Artists and their fellow-travelers turn out for all three. The <i>Arbitrary Art Grants<\/i> are economic Dada. The <i>Tiny Art Grants<\/i> are a satire on (big, bigger biggest-best) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.burningman.com\/\">Burning Man<\/a>. In Michigan, there&#8217;s an assumption that the people know best. <\/p>\n<p>Who could endorse that premise? And yet, when I took issue with it in Seattle, predicting failure, the end result in the rat-infested shadow of a bridge proved to be a landmark, forcing a recant.
