One artist vandalized the work of another. The pencils aren&#8217;t just pencils, any more than Claes Oldenburg&#8217;s <em><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz_photos\/wWnwkJcP2zjAKz1sD3Uurw?select=iWEK7h4eILaN2LnJGlUDdg\">bat<\/a> is just a bat. In a more rational world than the one shaping up online, art critics would support the artist, not the vandal.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I think it&#8217;s worth remembering that Damien Hirst started this fight when he took teenage street artist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/groups\/327685@N24\/\">Cartrain<\/a> to court for copyright infringement, and, in an astonishing miscarriage of justice, won. <\/p>\n<p>Copyright? Cartrain&#8217;s collages are satires.<\/p>\n<p>An example of what Cartrain was forced to hand over to Hirst&#8217;s lawyers, posted by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/profile\/jonathanjones\">Jonathan Jones<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cartrainshirst.jpg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/anotherbb\/Cartrainshirst.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"margin: 0pt auto 20px; text-align: center; display: block;\" height=\"485\" width=\"360\" \/><\/span>I love Hirst&#8217;s work, but he&#8217;s in danger of becoming the Dick Cheney of the art world.<\/p>\n<p>As Jones wrote:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/artanddesign\/damienhirst\">Damien Hirst<\/a>&#8216;s feud with teenage street artist Cartrain could yet become <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/commentisfree\/2009\/sep\/14\/charlie-brooker-damien-hirst\">the most controversial story of Hirst&#8217;s career<\/a>.<br \/>\nIt really is vile for a rich man to use his power to bully someone who,<br \/>\nafter all, is just trying to emulate him by making art with found<br \/>\nmaterials. <\/p>\n<p>Presumably, what irks Hirst is that Cartrain used<br \/>\nHirst&#8217;s diamond skull in a series of collaged portraits of the skull&#8217;s<br \/>\ncreator. Hirst successfully demanded that all the young artist&#8217;s works<br \/>\nincorporating the diamond skull <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/artanddesign\/jonathanjonesblog\/2008\/dec\/15\/damien-hirst-cartrain\">should be handed over<\/a>, presumably to be destroyed. Doesn&#8217;t the Guardian employ editors?) Of course Cartrain should give Hirst back his <strike>dick<\/strike> pencils. But Hirst needs to stop <i>being<\/i> such a dick.
