Although Opera Idaho has been in existence, under one name or another, since 1973, the story of opera in Boise begins before that. As long ago as the early 1960’s, the Boise Philharmonic annually presented modestly produced operas featuring singers drawn from around the region. Today, Opera Idaho produces three fully-staged productions and a variety of special events and community engagement activities. Opera Idaho has collaborated with other institutions most notably with their recent successful collaboration on ALL IS CALM with Boise Contemporary Theater.
Opera Idaho’s Operatini events are popular evenings of opera in a relaxed setting, targeted toward audiences who may not be familiar with the artform. These events are performed at the Sapphire Room in near-downtown and include food, drink, and an opportunity to socialize in a fun and inviting atmosphere. In the summer of 2021, a free Opera in the Park project was started. That new effort has been an immediate success attracting around 2,000 patrons in its 2022 offering.
