National Museum Wales – Amgueddfa Cymru – is the most important cultural institution in Wales and a leader in the UK in public engagement and cultural participation. It holds internationally significant and diverse collections of art and design, history and archaeology, and natural sciences, numbering over 5 million items.
Our work is based on the principle that culture is created by people and communities. Our collections and other resources come from the society of which we are part, and are continually renewed through our work with the public. Every year we attract over 1.8m visitors and, having recently completed a successful redevelopment at St Fagans, the Museum is now working on the next stages of development of its seven museums.
We are now looking for exceptional candidates for the role of Director of Collections & Research. The Collections & Research Division has successfully established a strong profile within and beyond Wales for its collections which are of exceptional range and quality. Substantial strands of our natural science and art collections are Welsh but a significant part are of wider, international origin. The Director will provide intellectual and managerial leadership for the Collections & Research Division and its 120 staff, ensuring it aligns with and supports the Museum’s Vision, ‘Inspiring People, Changing Lives’. As a member of the senior management team this Director has a strategic role to play across Amgueddfa Cymru, and will co-deliver the vision, operational plan and programme.
This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the largest and most innovative museums in the UK. Candidates should be able to demonstrate a track record of leading teams and successfully managing research, public engagement and collections management. You must be committed to the social purpose of museums, and up to date with current knowledge of museological thinking and practice, understanding and how this influences policy and strategy. A passion for the culture of Wales and the work of Amgueddfa Cymru is highly advantageous.
While the ability to speak Welsh is not essential for this role, we would support applicants who are interested in learning Welsh.
We are using an external recruitment company to administer the process for this job. You are welcome to apply in Welsh and this will not lead to a delay.
