On Wednesday, the Joffrey Ballet said that it set an attendance record in 2017-2018, breaking a previous record claimed by the 2016-2017 season.

According to the company, total attendance in 2017-2018 exceeded 100,000 patrons, with ticket revenue surpassing $7.7 million. The Joffrey says this represents an 11% increase from the previous year.

The company states these numbers were hoisted by two shows. The first, “Giselle,” earned four stars from freelance critic Lauren Warnecke. “There are no bells and whistles here, no pyrotechnics, puppetry, or modern technologies,” she writes, “just Peter Farmer’s beautiful backdrop and costumes (on loan from Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre) and the dancing.”

The second show recognized was Alexander Ekman’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream,” which Warnecke called “undeniably a masterpiece.”

The Joffrey’s 2018-19 season will begin with “Swan Lake,” opening October 17, 2018.
