A Doll’s House, Part 2,” an ambitious and much-admired sequel to the classic Ibsen play, will close on Broadway on Sept. 24.

The closing is earlier than expected — the play had been scheduled to run until Jan. 7. But the run will still have been longer than that of many contemporary nonmusical productions; at the time of the show’s closing, it will have played 30 preview and 173 regular performances.

The play, a witty drama, imagines what happens when Nora Helmer, who walked out on her husband and children at the end of Ibsen’s 19th-century play, returns for a visit 15 years later.

“A Doll’s House, Part 2” is the Broadway debut for its playwright, Lucas Hnath, whose earlier work, “The Christians,” is being widely staged around the country. Directed by Sam Gold, “A Doll’s House, Part 2” was nominated for eight Tony awards, and won one, for the actress Laurie Metcalf.

The play, which began previews March 30 and opened April 27 at the Golden Theater, got off to a slow start at the box office, grossing less than $150,000 in each of its first four weeks. But the show opened to nearly universal acclaim from critics, word-of-mouth built, and as awards season got underway, its financial performance improved dramatically, topping out at $646,910 during the week that ended July 23. Then three of the original four cast members departed, and, despite positive reviews, grosses dropped; last week, the show grossed $253,624.

“A Doll’s House, Part 2” was capitalized for $3.6 million, according to a filing with the federal Securities and Exchange Commission. A spokesman for the production declined to comment about whether the show will have recouped its capitalization by the time it closes. The lead producer is Scott Rudin.
