Norman Lebrecht on shifting sound worlds
The Irish government has commemorated Count John McCormack on a 10-Euro coin.
John McCormack (1884-1945) was a world-renowned Irish tenor, spanning Handel to Hollywood.
A unique and absolutely glorious voice which still weaves its magic,
Ten-euro coins? We haven’t even had a five-euro one, yet. Good singer, though.
Glad about the tenner, this is the second clip I have seen of John McCormack with his little black book. Did the man have no memory to go with his voice?
