Minnesota’s ex is 90 tomorrow

Stanisław Skrowaczewski celebrates his 90th birthday in Tokyo on 3 October 2013 with a performance with the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, where he holds the title of Honorary Conductor Laureate.

Skrowaczewski will conduct a series of concerts in Tokyo, including several performances of Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, a work that he conducted in the presence of the composer in 1948 at its Paris premiere. The rest of his season includes returns to the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra and Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, among others.

During the Minnesota lockout, Skrowacewski, who was music director in Minneapolis for 19 years, has been outspokenly on the musicians’ side.

We wish him the happiest and busiest of birthdays.

If you’re a Minnesotan or Mancunian, send him a greeting via Slipped Disc.

Bon anniversaire, Maestro. I recommended that you and Gary Graffman dine at Daniel et Denise in Lyon a few years back and you both went back every night. My treat the next time we find ourselves there. Your performances with the Curtis Orchestra over the years, especially the premier of you Concerto for Left Hand with GG, were memorable.

Bravo Maestro!Saw you in Frankfurt 2 weeks ago(Prokofiev:Romeo and Juliet exc;Ravel:Scheherazade and Shosty 10).Marvellous!!!Wish you many wonderful years full of inspired music making. However, how sad you and your colleague of the same age,Maestro Julius Rudel, must feel about the terrible course of things in Minnesota and at NYC Opera!

  3. Happy birthday, Maestro. You graciously allowed me, a fresh Juilliard graduate, to make my solo debut with Harold in Italy. That, and your performances of Shostakovich’s Fifth, Berlioz’ Roméo and Juliette, Bruckner’s Fourth (actually, any Bruckner), Beethoven’s Fifth, and many other works will always be with me. I am proud of your stand with the musicians of the Minnesota Orchestra. Thanks and all the best to you.

  4. What a fabulous musician, whom I’ve been lucky to see in action in a number of places over the years. He really should be commemorating this anniversary in Minnesota.

  5. I’m neither Minnesotan nor Mancunian, but as an Italian that won’t stop me from saying “Cento di questi giorni, Maestro”!

  6. Best birthday wishes, dear Maestro, from all of our Minnesota family…

  7. I have played under him. Very nice guy on and off the stage.
