Who’s who in the Salzburg race. And who’s not.

Vienna’s Standard reports that Michael Haefliger of the Lucerne Festival has ruled himself out of the Salzburg vacancy. Sensible man.

The frontrunner is Marcus Hinterhäuser, former head of concerts at the festival until Pereira took over. He is followed by Peter de Caluwe (La Monnaie, Brussels), Serge Dorny (Opera de Lyon) and Pierre Audi (Netherlands Opera). Dorny has been playing will he/won’t he all summer with the Semper Oper, Dresden.

A decision is expected as early as September 25.

  1. Bassolirico says:

My most sincere prayer is that this person will not belong to the Regietheater mafia promoting decadence all over the western theatrical institutions. Salzburg is still a beacon of light whereas also this year Bayreuth has shown to be the one of Decadence.

    • Once more this silly generalization about the “Regietheater mafia”…. it’s just a bit of a yawn

  2. All four names will be good choices. However the most interesting one will be Peter de Caluwe. He is younger than the others and he has done wonders in Brussels within his limited budget, findind the right balance between exciting directors on the one side but which are also willing to serve the operas and not use them for their own purposes on the other. But, at the end, it is Kaiserin Helga who is going to choose . So let’s hope she will find someone with whom she will – finally – be able to work with.

  3. The Kuratorium will choose, not any one figure.
