Norman Lebrecht on shifting sound worlds
Fred Katz, a cellist of many genres, has died aged 94.
Fred Katz was a unique musician. He was a pioneer as a jazz cellist and his interests were broad: ethnomusicology, anthropology, cabbalistic studies… As a composer, he combined folk music from different parts of the world with jazz to stunning effect. If only the scores were available and we could play this music! Rest in piece and may the music live on.
Might be worth viewing dvd ‘Jazz on a Summer’s Day’ for short but remarkable atmospheric scene featuring Fred Katz practising his Bach……,
Author, novelist, broadcaster, cultural commentator.
