Piano wars: Yundi is back in the eye of a media storm

He’s on the cover of a Beijing magazine, which conducted an interview with the star and with China’s most respected piano professor, Zhou Guangren. The professor was quoted as being studiously critical of his recent Beethoven playing, albeit in friendly terms.

When the article appeared, Yundi’s millions of fans turned the social media site weibo white-hot with demands for the release of the interview tape. Yundi’s father phoned the professor, recorded the call without her permission and released the tape on weibo.

Playing the piano game in China is not for the faint-hearted.

  1. Ignacio Martínez-Ybor says:

I normally think that Yundi Li’s usual performances are awful (live performances I have attended and recordings), by-the-numbers playing. So, the professor is probably right. Fans are usually silly, of musicians, or worse, those of politicians.

  2. Matsumoto Jun says:

In addition to the professor interview in the article, Yundi’s vicious comment on other pianists is also hilarious.

  3. Zhou Guangren is a legend in Chinese classical music. For Yundi’s father to resort to such stunt that lacks class. I also have the opinion that Yundi’s Beethoven playing is mediocre at best.

  4. It’s really miserable for a pianist to feel alone in his career……

  5. Sho Sakurai says:

Yundi Li now is an internet celebrity rather than a classical pianist.
