Iraq’s chief conductor suffers major health crisis

Karim Wasfi, founder and chief conductor of the Iraq National Symphony Orchestra, has posted a picture of himself in hospital in a poor condition. A former cellist, Karim 42, has been the driving force in restoring orchestral music to the war-torn country. We met two years ago at a conference in Holland, where he impressed everyone with his vision and ambition.

His Facebook messages say that his health deteriorated badly and he has been in hospital since July. He has lost part of his right foot and his left eye is threatened. We send warm wishes for his recovery.

  1. Such sad, awful news to read. He’s done so much with that orchestra and country as Andrew White, the vicar, has in Bagdad Parish.

  2. I am so sad to hear about this. I was in school with Karim and remember him being a very imposing, driven, and fascinating man then. I’m so glad–yet not surprised–to hear of his success in life. I will keep him in my prayers.
