The ebullient Belgian head of Madrid’s Teatro Real – and former revolutionary leader o the Salzburg Festival and Opéra de Paris – is telling his opera colleagues today that he is suffering from cancer and undergoing treatment in a German clinic for the next three months.
Mortier, 69, is planning on getting better. In a worst-case scenario, he has given the Spanish government six names of progressive directors whom he would like to succeed him. The Government, however, has Spanish candidates in mind.
Here are the two lists:
Viktor Schoner (Bavarian State Opera), Alexander Neef (Toronto), Serge Dorny (Lyon), John Berry (English National Opera), Pierre Audi (De Nederlandse Opera), Bernd Loebe (Frankfurt Opera).
Antonio Moral (Mortier predecessor’s), Pedro Halffter, Joan Matabosch.
Here’s what Gerard thinks about it all, interviewed in el Pais. We wish him a full and speedy recovery.
