The Chicago-based Spektral Quartet, which does icebreaking work on the kiddies front, have a new project. They’ve commissioned 40 composers to write ringtones for your phone.
The catch? They need to raise $8,000. By the end of the month. Watch the video here. You could be in for an upgrade.
Here’s more from cellist Russell Rolen:
The project is called Mobile Miniatures, and each composer will write a piece that is 3 to 30 seconds long. We’ll record them and master them twice: one set of tracks for normal listening conditions, and one set that is optimized for the tiny phone speakers so that people can use them as ringtones, alerts and alarms.
We have almost 40 composers on board for the project, including well-known names like Nico Muhly, David Lang, Augusta Read Thomas, Shulamit Ran, and Ted Hearne. We also have Greg Saunier, the mastermind behind the progressive band Deerhoof, and Julia Holter, an experimental singer-songwriter.
