Czech composer dies

Ilja Hurnik, composer of several operas and a Four Seasons chamber suite, as died aged 90. He was the brother-in-law of Petr Eben, the country’s foremost composer during the late communist era. Together, they devised a Czech version of the Carl Orff teaching method.

  1. Met Petr Eben years ago in Prague but never Hurnik. Eben was a real force in contemporary Czech music. I hear that Oldrich Korte, one of the last of the old guard, is ill and in an assisted living situation.

    Hurnik was a wonderful pianist. I have some of his recordings. He did Debussy and Janácek among other things. The Four Seasons Suite was recorded with the old Vlach Quartet and members of the Czech Phil under Ancerl.
