Fernando Grillo, international soloist and head of the double-bass department at Rome’s Santa Cecilia Conservatory, has taken his own life in his home town, Perugia. He jumped from a fourth-floor window into an internal courtyard on July 23 and died on impact. He was 67.
Karlheinz Stockhausen used to call him ‘the Buddha of the double-bass’. Italian media crowned him the Paganini of his instrument.
A prolific composer for the instrument, Grillo’s works were published by Schott. Our sympathies to his family, friends and many students.
