Alisdair Kitchen’s down to the wire. Whatever will he do next?
Bach saves the most overtly showy toccata until last. As an extension of the double trills in the previous variation, here we have quasi triple trills in explosive bursts, complete with cascades of sparks. I could resist deploying the big guns at the beginning and adding the occasional octave doubling… After all, I was playing a Bösendorfer – though only a baby, it still possessed the epic bass register that this manufacturer is famous for. Plus I’m sure that many a self-respecting harpsichordist would draw the 16 foot stop in this variation!
