Eric Hasting has been leading the Epsom Symphony Orchestra at the Epsom Playhouse since 1961. Before that, he played in the London Philharmonic, but a racecourse town in sleepy Surrey offered a gentler way of life and, perhaps, a longer one.
But all things must come to an end and Eric has let it be known that he won’t take his seat for the season-opener of Mendelssohn, Wagner and Beethoven. Julia Burkhert will take over. We wish Eric a happy retirement.
Off the top of our heads, only Arnold Rosé at the Vienna Philharmonic had a longer tenure in the hot seat.
