A cheeky concoction of scales: Goldberg #23 (you can try this one at home)

Variation 23

This is my favourite toccata variation; a cheeky concoction of scales and antiphonal effects that reveal Bach’s (often overlooked) sense of humour. A shadow passes over the sun in the second half – we cannot escape the melancholy turn that the ground harmony takes at this point, which is such a touching moment in every variation – but the light bursts out again at the end, with a flourish of parallel thirds and sixths in contrary motion (a corner which makes me, and possibly other players, a bit nervous!)
