Welcome to the BBC funeral parlour

The lobby of old Broadcasting House has been done up to make it look less shabby beside the overspent new one.

The lovely receptionists have been restored to their historic station, to the left of the entrance, shielded at last from frontal blasts of weather.

But behind them the designer – who was probably paid a million for the idea by the BBC and half a million as pay-off – has come up with the kind of curtains you only expect to see at final rites in Hoop Lane. Dyed a vile shade of orange and lined in silk, they make you want to press a button and push the whole hapless design team into the crematorium.

  1. Perhaps the portable space heater will take care of the “vile” curtains.
