Vienna mourns its premier double-bass

Alfred Planyavsky, who played in the State Opera, Vienna symphony orchestra and finally in the Vienna Philharmonic, has died at 89.  His 1970 history of the instrument, Geschichte des Kontrabasses, is recognised as the standard work.

Starting in the Vienna Boys Choir and serving as a soldier in the second world war, Alfred sang tenor solos on Vox recordings in the early 1950s before landing his first post as principal double-bass. He went on to found a double-bass archive at the Austrian National Library.
