Norman Lebrecht on shifting sound worlds
Hard to tell who’s getting sent up highest here, but Leon Fleisher is having lots of fun.
The video was scripted and filmed by Nick Canellakis, a Curtis graduate.
Happy 85th B-day, Leon (belated, July 23). I’ve witnessed your master classes and they are inspiring whether your eyes are open or shut!
I hold lasting impressions & insights for Leon Fleischer. I had the pleasure of working with him at the New England Conservatory in 1983-84. One particular project was an Arthur Schnabel Festival: Leon conducting, Leonard Shure & Claude Frank performing the “Emperor” and Mozart 21 respectively. with gratitude, Peter
I had the great privilege of participating in Leon Fleisher’s weekly classes during my Peabody year (’82) and his influence on my musical thinking has been enormous. I learned as much if not more from listening to him teach others as I did from playing for him myself. I feel a debt of gratitude to this great musician!
That was hysterically funny! Fleischer, not only a brilliant pianist and GREAT musician, but his comedic talent and timing, coupled by the “dry” delivery, is truly worthy of inclusion in one of Christopher Guest’s next films! Well done, Leon Leon!
Thanks for posting, Norman!
