Just in: John Tom steps in to save the BBC’s Wagner Proms

Robert Holl has undergone surgery and won’t be able to sing Gurnemanz in Parsifal at the end of August in the BBC Proms. Enter Sir John Tomlinson, who knows every Wagner role and is the most willing trooper in world opera. If the concert has not sold out yet, it will now.

Among other changes announced today, Mihoko Fujimura will sing Brangäne in Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde on 27 July, replacing Sophie Koch.

Christianne Stotijn has withdrawn from a Britten concert on 29 July. She is depped by Ruby Hughes.

We wish the invalids a speedy recovery.

  1. Theodore McGuiver says:

Robert Holl backed out of King Mark in Bayreuth last year due to the after-effects of throat cancer surgery, so his going under the knife again is not good news. I sincerely hope he recovers fully. Madame Fujimura is a real pro and sang Brangäne on the Domingo/Stemme recording. She was also an excellent Fricka and Kundry in Bayreuth. The Proms are getting good replacements in her and John Tom.

  2. Gurnemanz says:

They could not have found a better replacement then Sir John. Brilliant!

  3. Nigel Curtis says:

Only slightly off-topic here, has anybody attended any good 2013 Proms?

Of particular interest is the Thomas Ades world premiere Totentanz and London premiere of Stockhausen’s Welt Parlament.
