English National Opera loses its head

Loretta Tomasi, chief executive of ENO for the past ten years, is stepping down. No reason has been given but there is a new Tory-crony chairman, Martyn Rose, in the house and he may want to insert one of his own tribe.

After disastrous beginnings, Loretta formed a strong partnership with artistic director John Berry, renewing the company’s identity with a blaze of contemporary work and maintaining  general financial stability. Losses in the past two years may have sapped her will to continue.

Loretta had been linked last year with the top job at Sydney Opera House but declined the approach, preferring to stay in the old country. She will leave the Coli before the end of 2013.
