Norman Lebrecht on shifting sound worlds
This has been around for a little while, but it stays compelling.
This is a hoot!!! Music to blow up bridges by! Don’t know it I would select Figaro’s Largo el Factotum for this but it’s fun anyway! And who knows–Figaro–like Dolly–does everything else, maybe he blows up bridges for Almaviva!!! But who was that Masked Man–sorry Johnny Depp!!! Who is the singer? I cant place him. I was thinking John Charles Thomas but the timbre is wrong. I also had fun singing along! Figaro is a high baritone role and I’m taking on more baritone roles as I get older, my voice gets darker & less flexible and my upper register isn’t always registering! Placido Domingo, eat your heart out!!!!
For the first time in 40 years of living in the Commonwealth of Virginia, VDOT has made me laugh, and without irony or sarcasm, to boot.
Thanks for this.
