Norman Lebrecht on shifting sound worlds
Janos Starker, in these extraordinary class videos, reveals the secrets of his technique and longevity. Compelling wisdom.
On reading your title for this blog, I thought it was going to be advice on the only remaining way to take your instrument abroad – airlines clearly being out of the question!
Not just cellists but also viola players and violinists will face problems if we don´t act firmly against the new airlines
It’s clear from this inspiring film that the Yehudi Menhuin School would have done well to have Starker as guest teacher as opposed to Maurice Gendron.
With the Hungarian cellist Csaba Onczay I visited Mr Starker in his home in autumn of 1984. We were about to leave when the cellists discovered that both had Goffrillers. It was obvious that our departure will be postponed! They began to go through the cello repertoire without regard of the time and circumstances..For me it constituted a tremendous show- a playful competition of 2 Goffrillers and 2 superb artists!
